| Keep variety in your workout - It is a good idea that you change your routine every 4-8 weeks depending on your mind and body. Your muscles will need an overload in order for you to continue seeing some change, so it is best to keep variety in your cardio routine. It is also a good reason to help relieve boredom and to prevent injury by crosstraining!
Intermittent activity will help just as well - Shorter bouts of exercise will also “do the body good”, especially if you are new to exercise. You may want to try doing 5 minutes on the treadmill, then 5 minutes on the elliptical, then 5 minutes on the stairmaster and then go back to the first machine and repeat a few times. Or for beginners trying a new machine, you can do 2-3 minutes of exercise (work) and 1-2 min of rest. Continue to do this until you increase your work time and decrease your rest time!
Stay hydrated throughout your workout - Some people think that taking a few sips at the water fountain is enough during a 2 hour workout, but that will not help replenish your body. It is always best to bring at least a 16 oz water bottle with you to drink before, during and after your workout!
Focus on quality, rather than quantity - Focus on form during your strength workouts. If you increase your weight too quickly, you will compromise your form and increase your chance for injury!
Cardio + strength is the right mix! - Many people think cardio is the most important component in losing fat and weight, but this really cannot happen unless both cardio and strength are components. Strength training will increase your lean muscle mass, which will help increase your resting basal metabolism and help you burn more calories and fat!
Put “core” into every routine - Using your core during training is greatly important to improving all of your movements. Strengthening your core can be done by using a physio ball, medicine balls, BOSUs, bands, etc. Get involved in incorporating these exercises into your routine to make more efficient use of your time!
Control your portion sizes and eat every 3-4 hours - As much as it is important to get exercise into your lifestyle to help you see changes in your body, nutrition plays as much or more of an important role. In order to increase your metabolism you must fuel your body every 3-4 hours. This will help in calorie burning and increasing your fitness level. |
